Targa events have both a competition and a touring category, providing entrants with access to closed road driving in unique environments, greater distance and an extraordinary sense of achievement. Targa Tasmania, in particular, is a genuine endurance test, where simply finishing the event is seen as a major achievement. However, the main goal for most competitors at Targa Tasmania is to be awarded a 'Targa Trophy' for completing all Targa stages under a pre-set time. The award is modelled on the historic Sicilian Targa Florio event, where a porcelain plate was awarded for completing the race.
