About Willowbank Raceway
Located just outside of Ipswich in Queensland, Willowbank Raceway stands as Australia’s premier drag racing destination. The facility opened its gates in 1985, filling a void left by the closure of the drag strip at Surfers Paradise. Since then, it has evolved into a world-class venue featuring a quarter-mile track that attracts both professional international teams and local enthusiasts. It is the permanent home of the Winternationals, which is widely recognized as the largest drag racing event held outside of North America. The track serves as a versatile hub for a wide range of motorsport activities beyond its flagship championship rounds. Throughout the year, the calendar is packed with street meets, testing sessions, and specialized events like the Nostalgia Drags and the Jamboree, which focuses on high-tech small-capacity imports. The layout includes a comprehensive staging area, modern timing systems, and extensive spectator seating that offers clear views of the entire strip from the start line to the braking zone. Recent years have seen significant investment in the facility to maintain its status as a top-tier venue within the Australian motorsport landscape. Major track resurfacing and lighting upgrades have ensured that Willowbank remains capable of hosting elite-level competition under both day and night conditions. The venue’s location adjacent to the Queensland Raceway circuit makes the area a significant regional center for racing culture in Australia.
Getting There
Willowbank Raceway is situated approximately 45 minutes west of Brisbane and 15 minutes from the Ipswich CBD. The primary access point is via the Cunningham Highway; visitors should take the Champions Way exit, which leads directly to the track entrance. Ample on-site parking is available for both competitors and spectators. During major events like the Winternationals, traffic management plans are usually in place, so arriving early is recommended to avoid congestion at the main gates.
